I cringe as much as the next guy when older cool cars get munched, but keep in mind that even a 57 Chevy would be looked at like anything from 1998 does to us today, it was just a 20-year-old-car.

‘57 Chevies were certainly desirable cars in 1976.
M y dad dated a girl who had an immaculate Nomad at the time, and she freely admitted that she worked her job purely to support her car. Kept supplies in the back and would go out and wash it on her lunch break, and ways always finding notes on the windshield from people wanting to buy it.
Still, they weren’t terrible valuable and really not rare yet, so, while good ones had a following, rough ones were not yet worth restoring and were basically disposable cars. I guess a comparison would be the Mercedes R107, where you can hardly give away a rough but running example, but immaculate ones are $30k+

I bet the ‘57 was a confiscated street racer or some crime-related vehicle the CHiP destroyed on purpose.
